Mondays at the Max with Wayne State

In cooperation with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Department of Music is pleased to announce the second season of “Mondays at the Max with Wayne State.”  This concert series features premier Wayne State student ensembles at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

All concerts begin at 7:30 pm in the Music Box at the Max M. Pieces by Irving Berlin, Thad Jones, and more—including a dedication of Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk to the late Department of Music alum Ernie Matchulat who passed away on January 21, 2013. A lifelong musician (saxophone and clarinet) Ernie was a 60-year member of the Detroit Federation of Musicians and long active in the Detroit music scene, he led and performed with his own big band and jazz combos, and was a 25-year member of the Detroit Concert Band. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he performed with the notable 7thArmy Symphony in Germany,where he met his beloved wife Anna-Maria. A faculty member at Madonna University and educator for 40 years, he was a band and orchestra director at various schools in the Detroit, Highland Park and Livonia school systems before retiring in 1994.

April 8 Choral Showcase featuring Concert Chorale, Choral Union, Women’s Chorale, Men’s Chorus, and Symphonic Chorus: Norah Duncan IV, Ann Marie Koukios and Scott Hanioan, conductors

Featuring a performance of Wayne State Department of Music alum Jerry Grant's composition Island In Space for choir and electroacoustics (composer will be present).  Island In Space speaks about our world and place in the universe and out need to listen to what the Earth is telling us—feel its rhythm, hear its music and care for the only world we have in the cosmos.  The performance features multimedia images and text based on the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, T.S. Eliot and the composer.

Having had a career in film composition since 1978, composer/conductor Jerry J. Grant has scored and supervised or conducted nearly 500 episodes of television film and features. He blends his orchestral and rhythm-laced background to produce his unique individual style.
