Biography

American baritone Ivan Griffin is a versatile artist whose experiences range from opera and concert to musical theater. He has been praised for, among other things, his “excellent diction and superb sense of theater” in roles ranging from Il Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro to the baritone soloist in Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies. He has performed with numerous companies throughout the Unites States and abroad, including Michigan Opera Theater, Buffalo Lyric Opera, South Carolina Opera Theater, and Great Lakes Lyric Opera. Recently he delighted audiences in Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Holland with his portrayal of the roles of “Lawyer Frazier” and “Jake” in Gershwin’s beloved Porgy and Bess with New York Harlem Productions. Griffin has also performed as guest soloist with the Louisiana Philharmonic, Nashville Symphony, South Carolina Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony, and the Flint Symphony, among others. He has been featured on concert tours of the United Kingdom and South Africa with the Western New York-based Rochester Oratorio Society and Our Own Thing Chorale of Ann Arbor, Michigan, respectively. The recipient of various awards, they include fellowships to the Bach Aria Festival and Institute, Stony Brook, New York and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival in Ohio.
